SOMETHING ABOUT MARY

Mary on Kauai with her Hawaiian Prince

BIOGRAPHY

As the daughter of artistic parents, Mary was surrounded at an early age by art and music. She won awards for her creative posters and science projects as a teenager.
Mary attended UCLA in California, majoring in English and elementary education. After a few frustrating years teaching, she worked in the field of educational research and later in the communications industry, always hoping someday to find a way to pursue a creative passion.

Upon leaving the corporate world, Mary finally decided to follow in her father's footsteps and pursue photography. One of her first teachers loaned her a macro lens. From that point on, Mary began to experiment with lighting and finding ways to get as close as possible to her main love and subject of interest--flowers.

Her work has often been compared to the paintings of Georgia O'Keefe. Her images often have a surreal quality that suggests a painting rather than a photograph.

Mary's travels throughout Europe, Indonesia and Asia sparked an interest in the study of Feng Shui, the use of color and elements of nature to create peace and harmony in any environment. Her images provide a focal point for meditation and awe of the extreme beauty and underlying messages from nature.

Mary currently resides on the tropical island of Kauai in Hawaii--often referred to as the "garden", or "healing island". Here, she uses the lush landscape of jungle and flowers as her palette. She is continually inspired by the magnificence and wonder of the planet.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

"My passion for flowers (inherited from my mother) led to the desire to examine them more closely. I'm continually amazed at their delicate, intricate structure, color, lines and shapes.

Across-the-board, they seem to resemble other aspects of nature--human skin, veins, mountain peaks, ocean waves and sand dunes. I believe the message from nature is that of "oneness". The universe is a compilation of similar shapes and lines--pathways leading to an understanding that all things are connected. Everything is comprised of the elements--water, earth, metal and fire--and everything is a reflection of the beauty within every living thing.

If there is any doubt about the existence of a greater plan, a brilliant artist/creator of all things, one need only pause to examine the intricate designs and rainbow of colors found in nature. I believe this awareness holds the key to our understanding of our own human nature and connection to each other."
